iOS 11: Everything You Need To Know

What is iOS 11?

iOS 11 is considered to be a minor update, but still brings forward some features that should’ve been included on iOS 10.

Who can get iOS 11?

iOS 11 is Apple’s latest update for their mobile devices such as the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. The only iPod Touch that will support iOS 11 is the 6th Gen iPod Touch, which is the latest version. With iPhones, anything after the iPhone 5s, such as the iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6+, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s+, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7+ will support iOs 11. With iPads, the iPad mini, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen and 4th Gen all support iOS 11. The iPad Air, and iPad Air 2 will both support iOs 11. All the versions of the iPad Pro will fully support iOS 11.

When is iOS 11 being released?

iOS 11 should be released sometime in the fall. Apple usually releases their updates around midway through September. If you are interested, you can signup for the public beta program that Apple offers and test out the software now, but be warned it’s still a beta. Developers have been testing out iOs 11 since early June.

New Features:

iCloud Message Sync

What this basically does it store your messages from your iPhone on iCloud so you never can have your messages go missing. This space counts against your iCloud storage space, so make sure you have a big enough storage plan for it. This feature allows you to always have your messages no matter what device you are using, as long as you are signed into iCloud.

Control Center Redesign:

As you can see, the Control Center has been redesigned into this one page scrollable function. This makes it much simpler, and allows Apple to focus on 3D Touch more than before.

Minor icon Changes:

As you can see, a few of the icons have also been modified. Apple usually does this with major iOS updates, as they did with iOS 9, iOS 10, and now iOs 11.

The lock screen has also been modified.

Apple Pay in iMessage

You can also now send money through iMessage with Apple Pay. This feature is not yet available, and its unsure whether it will be available in every country or not at this point.

Image and Video Codecs

Apple has decided to change to a better compressing image and video format. Pictures taken with your iPhone will be saved as .HEIC files, but when you try to send it, it exports it normally so the person on the other end will have no problems viewing it. With this new video and picture standard, Apple claims that you will save about 50% of your storage on pictures and videos. The resolutions have been modified, and .HEIC images are at a much higher resolution depending on the device.

Overall, iOS 11 is a small to medium update. It improves upon the previous features that were already in existence with iOS 10. It’s definitely worth taking a look at since Apple doesn’t charge for their updates, and you get several new features.
